Chapter 9 - The Silence

At 1:03 a.m., the storm stopped again.

The silence returned.

This time Mara noticed something.

The clock had stopped too.

1:03.

Second hand motionless.

Her phone showed no service.

No battery symbol.

Nothing.

Jonah looked outside.

The rain hung strangely beyond the window.

Not falling.

Suspended.

“What is this?”

Mara whispered:

“We’re not in normal time.”

A child laughed somewhere outside.

Jonah stepped backward.

Then another sound came.

A woman humming.

Mara froze.

Her mother used to hum that melody.

“Mara?”

She approached the door.

Jonah grabbed her arm.

“No.”

“That’s my mother.”

“You told me your mother died.”

“I know.”

Another hum.

Closer.

Then her mother’s voice:

“Sweetheart, open the door.”

Mara began crying.

Jonah tightened his grip.

“That’s not her.”

The thing inside the jar whispered:

May you like

“…correct…”
