Mara revealed something she had avoided telling him.
“This cabin belonged to Helen.”
Jonah stared.
“What?”
“She rented it every winter.”
“You knew her?”
“Not well.”
Mara worked as a volunteer ranger.
Helen had visited Blackwood for years.
Studying the station indirectly.
Preparing.
The cabin contained equipment hidden beneath the floorboards.
Mara found a lockbox.
Inside were notebooks.
Maps.
And one handwritten instruction:
IF SOMEONE RETURNS FROM STATION NINE, DO NOT LET THEM SLEEP UNTIL YOU KNOW WHICH ONE CAME BACK.
Jonah read it twice.
Then looked at Mara.
