Chapter 2 - Three Knocks

Nobody moved.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Jonah whispered:
“You said the storm stopped.”
“It did.”
“Then who’s outside?”
Mara reached for the lantern.
Nothing.
She shook it.
Still nothing.
The creature between the tweezers moved again.
Jonah recoiled.
“Throw it away.”
Mara almost did.
Then it whispered:
“…door…”
Both of them stared toward the entrance.
The knocking stopped.
Mara slowly approached the window.
“Don’t.”
Jonah stood.
“What?”
“There’s someone outside.”
He joined her.
Beyond the glass stood a man.
Motionless.
Thirty feet from the cabin.
Wearing a yellow raincoat.
His head was lowered.
“Do you know him?” Mara asked.
Jonah’s breathing changed.
“I don’t know.”
The man raised his face.
Jonah stumbled backward.
“What?”
Jonah pointed.
“That’s me.”
Mara looked again.
The figure had Jonah’s face.
Then the lantern suddenly reignited.
The yard was empty.
The storm returned all at once.
Wind.
Rain.
Thunder.
Jonah whispered:
“What the hell is happening?”
The thing in Mara’s hand curled tighter.
And said one more word.
May you like
“…remember…”
