Chapter 19 - Two Jonahs
A second Jonah appeared outside.
No yellow raincoat now.
Same clothes as the man inside.
Same face.
Same frightened expression.
He pressed both palms against the window.
“Mara!”
Inside Jonah backed away.
“No.”
The outside Jonah shouted:
“Don’t listen to him!”
Mara looked between them.
Both sounded identical.
Both knew her name.
Both knew Helen.
The creature in the jar suddenly slammed itself against the glass.
Toward the Jonah inside.
Mara looked at him.
His face changed.
“You think it’s warning you about me?”
She didn’t answer.
Outside Jonah screamed:
“CHECK HIS EAR!”
Mara stared at the inside Jonah’s right ear.
Where the receiver had been removed.
Then at the jar.
The creature stopped moving.
Inside Jonah whispered:
“Mara…”
She raised the lantern.
Behind his ear was a tiny black mark.
Not an injury.
A symbol.
A circle crossed by three lines.
Helen’s notebook contained the same symbol.
