Chapter 24 - The Copies

The five figures weren’t physical people.
Not fully.
They flickered when Jonah looked away.
Their voices overlapped.
The Listeners had built projections from memory.
But the real expedition members might still be somewhere in the facility.
Helen’s notes mentioned shield rooms.
Mara found them on the lower map.
Jonah headed toward the relays.
The projections followed.
Rebecca appeared.
Then Jonah’s father.
Then friends.
Then people he had forgotten.
Every voice told him to stop.
“You’ll kill them.”
“You’ll lose Helen.”
“You’ll never know what happened to Rebecca.”
That last one nearly broke him.
Rebecca stood three feet away.
“I wasn’t alone when I died.”
Jonah froze.
The Listeners knew the question he had carried for eleven years.
Mara shouted:
“Jonah!”
He closed his eyes.
“If you’re Rebecca, tell me what I don’t know.”
Silence.
When he opened his eyes—
May you like
she was gone.
