Chapter 7 - The First Voice

According to the recordings, the group camped inside the station.
At 12:17 a.m., the old communication system activated.
A woman’s voice came through the speakers.
Helen recognized it.
Her mother.
Dead fourteen years.
Then Evan heard his brother.
Nina heard her childhood friend.
Marcus heard his wife.
Daniel heard himself.
That was when things changed.
The video showed Daniel standing beneath a speaker.
His own voice whispered:
“Open Nine.”
Marcus pulled him away.
Daniel became furious.
“Didn’t you hear me?”
Marcus answered:
“That wasn’t you.”
Daniel screamed:
“It knows where she is.”
“Who?”
Daniel began crying.
“Our mother.”
Jonah stopped the video.
Mara asked:
“What happened to their mother?”
“I don’t know.”
Jonah looked toward the jar.
The creature had become completely still.
Then Jonah remembered something.
Not an image.
A sentence.
Helen shouting:
“They’re not speaking to us.”
He pressed both hands against his temples.
May you like
“They’re learning us.”
