Chapter 30 - Something Was Listening

Jonah never discovered whether the final recording came from Station Nine.
Helen analyzed the file.
No metadata.
No transmission source.
No identifiable compression.
Nothing.
Mara asked him to delete it.
He did.
At least he thought he did.
The following morning it returned.
Same seven seconds.
Again.
He deleted it.
It returned.
Eventually Jonah stopped trying.
He learned something important from Blackwood.
The Listeners didn’t need doors.
They needed attention.
Questions.
Grief.
The human need to hear one more sentence from someone who could no longer speak.
So Jonah stopped answering.
Years passed.
Station Nine remained sealed beneath concrete and steel.
Trees swallowed the access road.
The tower rusted.
People in Blackwood eventually stopped telling stories about it.
But hikers occasionally reported something strange during storms.
Their radios would turn on without power.
A familiar voice would call their name.
Sometimes a parent.
Sometimes a spouse.
Sometimes themselves.
Most people ignored it.
A few followed.
And every once in a while, someone returned from the mountain unable to remember where they had been.
They complained of a faint humming.
A sensation that something was moving near their ear.
Doctors found nothing.
Almost nothing.
Because if someone looked very carefully behind the right ear—
sometimes there was a tiny black mark.
A circle.
Three lines.
And somewhere far beneath Blackwood Mountain, where every relay had supposedly been destroyed, a single red light would blink on.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
May you like
Then a voice would whisper into the dark:
“Listen.”
