Chapter 5 - Blackwood Listening Station

Mara knew the local stories.
Everyone in Blackwood County did.
During the Cold War, the government supposedly built a listening station beneath the mountain.
Official records called it a meteorological facility.
Locals called it Station Nine.
It closed after an accident in 1987.
Seven employees disappeared.
No bodies were publicly recovered.
The tower remained standing because demolition was considered unsafe.
“What were you doing there?” Mara asked.
Jonah shook his head.
“I’m a documentary producer.”
“So?”
“I was investigating abandoned military facilities.”
“You came here for Station Nine?”
“I guess.”
The radio spoke again.
“Jonah.”
He covered his ears.
Mara switched it off.
The voice continued.
From the wall.
“Jonah.”
Then from beneath the floor.
“Jonah.”
Then directly behind them.
“Jonah.”
They turned.
Nobody.
The creature in Mara’s jar began moving frantically.
Not toward Jonah.
May you like
Away from him.
