Chapter 18 - The Storm Is the Boundary

Helen’s notes explained the storm.

It wasn’t weather.

Not entirely.

The array distorted electromagnetic and acoustic conditions around the mountain.

When the Listeners became active, the storm intensified.

When they projected strongly enough into the cabin—

the outside world appeared silent.

The “silence” was a perceptual overlay.

A bubble.

Inside it, the Listeners could imitate reality.

Jonah looked toward the window.

“So when everything goes quiet…”

“They’re close,” Mara said.

The clock stopped again.

1:03.

Silence.

Then someone knocked.

Three times.

Mara and Jonah stared at each other.

A woman’s voice said:

“Mara?”

Helen.

Mara almost moved.

Jonah stopped her.

Helen’s voice continued:

“He’s not Jonah.”

Mara looked at him.

Jonah shook his head.

The voice said:

May you like

“He never made it out.”
