Chapter 28 - The Last Whisper

Emergency lights activated.

The array stopped.

Silence.

Normal silence.

No voices.

No storm.

Just the breathing of six frightened people.

Then Jonah heard something.

A tiny whisper.

From the jar.

He opened it.

The little receiver-creature barely moved.

“…done…”

Then became still.

Helen stared.

“I never programmed speech into those.”

Jonah looked at her.

“What?”

“They shouldn’t be able to talk.”

Mara’s face changed.

“Then who was talking through it?”

Nobody answered.

For the first time, Jonah wondered whether the small receiver had ever belonged entirely to Helen’s technology.

Perhaps something else had learned to use it.

Perhaps something that had wanted the array closed.

Not every voice beyond the signal had necessarily been a Listener.
