Chapter 27 - Shutdown

Relay One failed.
The entire chamber shook.
Relay Two went dark.
The projections screamed.
Not in pain.
In hundreds of borrowed voices.
Jonah heard Rebecca begging.
Mara heard her mother.
Helen heard her son.
Everyone heard someone they loved.
Relay Three remained.
Jonah approached it.
His own voice whispered behind him:
“If you shut this down, you’ll never know whether we’re real.”
He stopped.
That was the final temptation.
Not reunion.
Uncertainty.
What if some tiny part of the voices truly came from the dead?
What if the array had actually touched somewhere beyond human understanding?
Helen shouted:
“Jonah!”
He looked at the switch.
Then said:
“If you’re real, you shouldn’t need me trapped to prove it.”
He pulled it.
May you like
Darkness.
