They found Daniel beside the array.
Real Daniel.
He had opened the resonance system after hearing his mother’s voice.
He refused to leave.
“She’s here.”
Marcus shouted:
“She’s dead!”
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t know that.”
Helen approached slowly.
“Daniel, listen to me.”
His mother’s voice emerged from the array.
“Don’t let them turn me off.”
Daniel started crying.
Jonah understood him.
He had almost done the same for Rebecca.
He said:
“Ask her something she doesn’t know.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“Something you never knew either.”
Daniel asked the voice:
“Where did you go after Dad left us?”
Silence.
His mother had disappeared for two weeks during his childhood.
Daniel never learned where.
The voice repeated:
“Don’t let them turn me off.”
