Chapter 20 - Jonah’s Choice

Mara wanted to run.

Jonah stopped her.

“No.”

“Don’t touch me.”

“I’m still me.”

“You don’t know that.”

He looked toward his double outside.

“Neither does he.”

The two Jonahs stared at one another through the window.

Then the outside version smiled.

Too slowly.

The smile widened beyond anything natural—not grotesquely, but unmistakably wrong.

Mara understood.

Outside Jonah wasn’t real.

It vanished.

The silence ended.

Storm returned.

Jonah collapsed into the chair.

“I’m infected.”

Mara opened Helen’s notebook.

“There has to be a way to stop it.”

Jonah whispered:

“If I stop being me…”

“You won’t.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

May you like

“But neither do you.”
