Chapter 14 - The Listeners

Helen named them Listeners.
Not because they listened to humans.
Because they existed where sound somehow crossed into something else.
She believed the array had opened a bridge.
The Listeners had no bodies.
No language of their own.
They learned by copying.
First sounds.
Then voices.
Then memories.
The small creature inside Jonah’s ear had been created by Helen.
Not grown.
Engineered.
Using material from the station’s experimental biological receivers.
She placed one in Jonah after realizing the Listeners were using human hearing pathways to manipulate perception.
The receiver disrupted their signal.
That was why Jonah could not hear properly when Mara found him.
Helen had saved him.
Mara stared at the jar.
“So pulling it out…”
“Removed the shield.”
The radio turned on.
Rebecca’s voice whispered:
May you like
“Exactly.”
