Chapter 24 - A Lifelong Promise

On a dazzling late-June sunset, Richard drove me to a private estate along the shores of Lake Michigan—a sanctuary overflowing with white roses and romantic fairy lights.
No press, no suited tycoons, no tense corporate contracts. Only the gentle lapping of lake waves and breathtaking natural beauty.
Richard took my hand, leading me into a gazebo by the water. He paused, looking deep into my eyes, his hands trembling slightly—a rare sign of nervousness in one of Wall Street's most powerful men.
"Evelyn," he began, his voice resonant and warm in the stillness. "We've walked through the coldest winter together, faced the most calculating enemies, and built the proudest empire. Yet the greatest prize in my life isn't found on financial balance sheets, but in waking up every single morning to see your smile."
He slowly withdrew a small rosewood ring box and popped the lid. A magnificent sun-cut diamond sparkled, catching the golden sunset glow.
"Will you marry me, Evelyn? Not as a business partner, not for a contract or obligation, but because I want to spend the rest of my days walking beside you."
Tears pricked my eyes—the first truly joyful tears shed after years of storms. I nodded, choking out the words:
May you like
"Yes, Richard. I will."
He gently slid the diamond ring onto my ring finger, pulling me into an embrace and sealing it with a deep, tender kiss born from shared trials.
