Chapter 10 - The Rebirth of Evelyn Vale

By Friday evening, the legal dust had settled completely.
The mansion was mine. The company was mine. The freedom, absolute and untethered, was finally mine.
I stood on the private terrace of the penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline of Chicago, holding a crystal glass of champagne. The bitter winter wind whipped against my coat, but I didn't feel cold. I felt alive.
A gentle knock sounded at the terrace door, and Richard Mercer stepped out into the night air, holding a folded document in his hand.
"The final signatures have been filed and authenticated," Richard said, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his weathered face. "Dominic Vale has officially resigned and relocated to a modest two-bedroom apartment on the far north side. Miss Quinn has already packed her bags and moved back to Ohio."
I turned to face him, clinking my glass against his. "And Vanessa?"
"Nowhere to be found," Richard chuckled softly. "Turns out fair-weather companions have a very short shelf life when the weather turns freezing."
I looked out over the sparkling city lights, reflecting on the journey of the past week. Eight years of compromise, silence, and subordination had ended in a single night of fire and reckoning. Dominic had tried to erase me, believing I was nothing more than an accessory to his success. Instead, he had unlocked the door to a power far greater than he had ever wielded.
"Thank you, Richard," I said softly, meeting his gaze. "For the invitation. For the support. For reminding me who I was before I let someone else define me."
Richard stepped closer, his eyes holding a depth of respect and warmth that made my heart skip a beat. "I didn't give you anything you didn't already earn, Evelyn. I merely handed you the key to the door you were already strong enough to kick down."
I smiled, the last remnants of my past life dissolving into the cold Chicago night.
May you like
Dominic had wanted me gone by morning.
Instead, I had taken his empire, his home, and his entire world—and I was just getting started.
