Chapter 20 - Unearthing the Past

Returning to Chicago following our triumphant New York campaign, Mercer-Vale entered its golden age of expansion. Yet beneath the radiant surface, dark secrets from the Vale family's past surfaced through an utterly unexpected source.

On a rainy afternoon, while reviewing blueprints for a new suburban commercial complex, my executive secretary knocked to announce an unannounced visitor.

Stepping into the office was Clara Vance—Dominic's half-sister, who had lived a reclusive life abroad for a decade after severing ties with her ambitious older brother.

"It's been a while, sister-in-law... or rather, Chairwoman Evelyn," Clara offered a melancholy smile as she sat down across from me.

I looked at her with surprise. Unlike Dominic or Julian, Clara had always possessed a gentle spirit, openly condemning her family's illicit schemes. "Clara? When did you return? Please, sit down."

Clara placed an aged, weathered wooden box onto the desk and flipped the latch. Inside lay a worn brown leather-bound diary and a stack of faded photographs.

"I flew in yesterday. I've long known what my brother did to you and your family over the years," Clara said, her voice choking. "Most importantly... the truth behind your father's tragic car accident a decade ago."

My heart seized. Blood turned to ice in my veins. I had always believed Dominic was merely an unfaithful husband and an economic predator, but realized now... his hands had been stained with blood far longer than I knew.

"What do you mean, Clara?" I whispered.

"Dominic wasn't innocent in your father's crash ten years ago," Clara wept, pushing the diary toward me. "This journal documents every single arrangement between Dominic and a private investigator to tamper with the vehicle's brake lines, forcing an expedited transfer of corporate inheritance."

I froze completely. I always thought Dominic was just an unfaithful spouse and an economic predator, but his hands had been stained with blood for years.

"Why are you telling me this now?" I asked, my voice trembling with suppressed rage.

"Because I used to fear his power," Clara buried her face in her hands. "But seeing him pay the price behind bars, and seeing you standing tall on the summit defending justice, I knew I could no longer hide behind cowardice to protect a murderer."

I stood up, stepping forward to place a hand on Clara's shoulder, profound empathy and absolute resolve surging within me. "Thank you, Clara. This diary is the missing puzzle piece. It's time to bring Dominic to trial for the ultimate crime: taking a human life."
