Chapter 13 - The Trial of the Decade

The courtroom of the Federal District Court of Northern Illinois was packed to absolute capacity by the time the gavel fell on Monday morning. Media outlets from across the country had descended upon Chicago to cover what the press had eagerly dubbed "The Fall of the Vale Empire."

I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by Richard Mercer and Arthur Pendelton. My attire was a sharp, impeccably tailored charcoal suit—a deliberate echo of the tuxedo Dominic had worn the night he tried to cast me out into the cold.

Across the aisle, seated at the defense table, Dominic looked hollowed out. Gone was the arrogant billionaire who commanded boardrooms with a sneer. In his place sat a deflated man in an orange jumpsuit, his eyes bloodshot and haunted, staring blankly at the polished oak defense table.

The prosecution’s case was airtight, built on a foundation of meticulously organized financial records, offshore transfer receipts, and digital logs that traced every illegally diverted dollar directly back to Dominic’s personal accounts.

When the prosecutor called me to the stand, a hush fell over the courtroom so profound you could hear the hum of the overhead lights.

I walked up to the witness stand with absolute poise, placed my hand on the Bible, and took my seat.

During cross-examination, Dominic’s defense attorney—a high-priced litigator desperately trying to salvage a lost cause—attempted to paint a picture of domestic misunderstanding.

“Mrs. Vale,” the lawyer asked smoothly, stepping toward the witness box. “Isn’t it true that you had full access to these financial records for years? Wouldn't that imply a level of complicity on your part?”

I looked down at the defense attorney with a calm, unwavering gaze that made him visibly hesitate.

“Counselor,” I replied, my voice carrying clearly across the silent courtroom. “Access is not authorization. For eight years, my husband meticulously concealed these transactions behind corporate shell companies and locked digital folders, actively preventing me from auditing the primary ledgers. The moment I discovered the extent of his illegal activities, I did what any law-abiding citizen—and rightful majority shareholder—must do: I handed the evidence directly to federal authorities.”

The lawyer swallowed hard, looked down at his notes, and stammered, “No... no further questions, Your Honor.”
