Chapter 2 - The Midnight Sapphire

By 9:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Meridian Hotel was vibrating with the low, expensive hum of Chicago’s elite. Crystal chandeliers refracted light across polished marble floors, illuminating rows of ice sculptures and waiters navigating the crowd with flutes of vintage champagne.

Dominic stood near the dais, nursing a scotch, looking every bit the ruthless corporate predator in his tailored charcoal tuxedo. On his arm, Vanessa Quinn beamed in a form-fitting gown of glittering gold mesh, basking in the warm attention of several senior bank executives. She thought she had won the grand prize. She thought she had stepped into a life built on a foundation of absolute security.

She had no idea the floor beneath them was about to give way.

The double mahogany doors at the far end of the ballroom swung open with a resounding click. The collective murmur of five hundred socialites dipped, then stuttered to a halt.

All eyes gravitated toward the entrance.

Standing in the threshold was Richard Mercer—imposing, silver-haired, and radiating an aura of understated, absolute power. But it wasn't Richard who caught every breath in the room. It was the woman walking beside him, her hand resting lightly and with total confidence upon his forearm.

A hush fell over the room as I stepped forward into the brilliance of the chandeliers.

The midnight-blue silk gown swept across the marble, featuring a daring bodice and a high slit that commanded the space. Diamonds hung at my ears, catching the light with every heartbeat. I wasn’t hiding behind a veil of submission anymore. I was wearing the armor of a woman who had nothing left to lose and everything to reclaim.

Across the room, Dominic’s glass slipped from his fingers, shattering against the marble floor with a sharp crack that pierced the silence. His face drained of color, his jaw slackening in sheer disbelief as he stared across the room at his discarded wife, standing arm-in-arm with the most dangerous man in the city.
