Chapter 11 - The Phantom Shareholder

The ink on the transfer deeds was barely dry when the true extent of Dominic’s financial house of cards began to unravel. Sitting in my newly acquired executive office—the very room where Dominic used to dismiss my ideas with a wave of his hand—I opened an encrypted dossier delivered directly by Richard’s intelligence team.
Arthur Pendelton stood by the window, nervously folding a handkerchief. “Evelyn, there is something else. When we audited the secondary offshore accounts Dominic set up last year, we found irregularities that go far beyond poor corporate governance.”
I raised my eyes from the glowing laptop screen. “Define irregularities, Arthur.”
“He didn't just mismanage funds,” Arthur said grimly, walking over to place a thick binder on the mahogany desk. “He systematically drained the pension reserve fund of Vale Enterprises to finance his private real estate acquisitions—and, coincidentally, to fund Miss Quinn’s lavish lifestyle in the Gold Coast.”
I flipped through the pages, my expression hardening into stone. Every document bore Dominic’s signature. He had committed federal fraud, believing that as long as he wore an expensive suit and controlled the board, no one would ever dare look beneath the surface.
“He left a paper trail a mile wide,” I murmured, a cold calm settling over me.
“If the Securities and Exchange Commission or the federal prosecutors get hold of these unredacted logs before we finalize the corporate restructuring, the company could face dissolution,” Arthur warned. “What do you want to do? Do we bury it?”
“Bury it?” I looked up, letting out a sharp, mirthless laugh. “Arthur, why would I bury the weapon that completely neutralizes the last remaining threat he poses?”
I reached for my phone, dialing a direct, private number that bypassed all gatekeepers. On the third ring, a deep, resonant voice answered.

“Mercer speaking.”
“Richard,” I said, leaning back in the leather chair. “It’s time to pay a visit to the federal prosecutor’s office. I have a parting gift for my ex-husband that he’ll never see coming.”
