Chapter 22 - New Dawn on Michigan Avenue

Emerging from the courthouse steps, the Chicago sky stretched high and azure, warm April sunlight washing over pavement still kissed by winter's chill.

Dozens of camera lenses and microphones instantly pivoted toward me. Reporters elbowed for position:

"Madam Evelyn, how do you feel after this life sentence is handed down to your ex-husband?" "Do you have a message for women currently facing similar betrayal?"

I paused on the courthouse steps, gazing out over the skyline where Mercer-Vale stood as an unyielding monument of power and resilience.

"There is no revenge sweeter than justice, and no power more enduring than truth," I declared clearly and confidently into the microphones. "Today, this chapter closes not merely as a legal case, but as proof that no individual can ever use wealth and power to conceal crime or manipulate the destiny of a woman who stands firmly on her own feet."

Richard stepped to my side, gently draping a cashmere overcoat over my shoulders with a proud smile. Together, we walked to the waiting Maybach, leaving the tumult behind as we drove toward the horizon.
