Chapter 12 - The Irony of the Subpoena

By Tuesday afternoon, the shockwave hit the financial district with the force of an earthquake.
Dominic Vale had been attempting to salvage what remained of his shattered reputation by meeting with a group of secondary investors at a private club downtown, desperately trying to convince them to back a new shell company. He thought he could outrun his past by changing zip codes and wearing a fresh suit.
He was wrong.
Two federal marshals walked uninvited into the private lounge, flanked by a representative from the U.S. Attorney’s office. The room went instantly silent as the lead investigator stepped forward, holding a thick manila envelope bearing the federal seal.
“Dominic Vale?” the officer asked, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls.
Dominic stood up, his face flushing crimson with a mixture of indignation and sudden panic. “This is a private club! Who authorized this? Do you know who I am?”
“We know exactly who you are, Mr. Vale,” the investigator replied coldly. “You are being served with a federal subpoena and a warrant for your arrest on charges of wire fraud, embezzlement of corporate pension funds, and securities fraud.”
The whispers among the assembled investors turned into gasps of horror. One by one, the men Dominic had been trying to woo stood up, slammed their napkins onto the table, and walked briskly out of the room, desperate to distance themselves from the unfolding disaster.

As the cold steel of the handcuffs clicked around Dominic’s wrists, his eyes darted frantically around the room, finally locking onto the security cameras mounted in the corners. In that moment of absolute humiliation, he realized the inescapable truth: he hadn't just been outmaneuvered by a rival corporation.
He had been methodically, brilliantly destroyed by the very woman he thought he could discard like trash before breakfast.
