Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The silence inside the high-rise penthouse was heavier than the winter snow pressing against the reinforced glass windows. Dominic Vale’s final words still hung in the air, cold and definitive. Pack your things. I want you gone by morning.
I stood motionless for three seconds, letting the shock wash over me and drain away, replaced by something much sharper. For eight years, I had played the dutiful corporate wife, smoothing over Dominic’s social blunders, entertaining clients I despised, and keeping the machinery of his public image running without a single smudge of grease. And how did he repay it? By trading me for Vanessa Quinn, a woman whose professional qualifications began and ended with her ability to stroke his ego and wear designer gowns paid for by joint accounts.
I walked over to the velvet-lined mahogany closet, my footsteps echoing against the hardwood. Dominic assumed I would fold. He believed my identity was entirely derivative of his last name—that without him, Evelyn Vale was nothing more than a ghost rattling around a gilded cage.
Reaching behind a false panel in the custom cedar dresser, I pulled out the heavy matte black envelope that had arrived three days prior. The gold-embossed script caught the low amber light of the bedroom.
Mrs. Evelyn Vale.
Inside was the invitation to the Meridian Winter Gala—the very event Dominic had just left to attend with Vanessa clinging to his arm. But the ticket in my hand did not list me as a spouse tagging along on corporate charity. It carried a different designation entirely.
Personal Guest of Honor: Richard Mercer.
I traced the handwritten signature at the bottom with the tip of my finger. Richard Mercer. The legendary titan of Chicago real estate and venture capital, a man whose shadow loomed so large over the financial district that Dominic had spent a decade and a half maneuvering around him like a chess player dodging a grandmaster. Dominic had avoided Richard at every turn, terrified of being indebted to a man who didn't play by conventional rules.
Beneath the card lay Richard’s handwritten note: Tonight, he finally learns who you are.
I slipped the invitation into my clutch and turned to the garment bag hanging deep in the shadows of the secondary closet—a piece of clothing Dominic had never laid eyes on, purchased in secret six months ago during a trip to Milan.

As I unzipped the bag, a cascade of midnight-blue silk spilled out, catching the light like liquid sapphire. It was fierce, breathtaking, and entirely unapologetic.
Dominic wanted me erased before dawn. Instead, I was about to give him the shock of his life.
