Chapter 16 - Shadows Behind the Throne

The Mercer-Vale empire, under the joint leadership of Richard and myself, rose to dominate not only Chicago but rapidly expanded its network into New York and London. Yet, the upper echelons of corporate high-stakes business were never a tranquil plain; they resembled a Go board rife with hidden traps and subterranean maneuvers.
On a cold January afternoon, Marcus Vance walked into my executive office with an unusually pensive expression, holding a gray, unmarked envelope.
"Madam Chair, there is a development I believe you need to see immediately," Marcus said, placing the envelope on my mahogany desk.
I looked up from a quarterly financial report, narrowing my eyes. "What is it, Marcus?"
"Minority shareholders represented by the Sterling Investment Fund unexpectedly swept up a massive block of floating shares on the open market. The move was executed with extreme discretion and only came to light once they had quietly secured nearly fifteen percent of the company's voting stock."
I slid the envelope open. Inside lay a photograph of a middle-aged man in an Italian tailored suit standing before our corporate headquarters, alongside a stock proxy agreement bearing a chillingly familiar name: Julian Vance—attorney Marcus's estranged cousin, notorious for ruthless corporate raiding tactics.
"Julian Vale... or rather, Julian Vance," I chuckled coldly, a sharp glint flashing in my eyes. "He assumed that because Dominic fell, this chairman's chair was left vacant for him to scavenge?"

"He isn't acting alone," Richard entered the room through the connecting side door, holding an espresso cup. His sharp features were framed by the winter twilight. "Behind Julian sits a cabal of anonymous European financiers. They intend to exploit our international merger phase to plant damaging rumors, crash our stock price, and stage a hostile takeover."
"They chose the wrong time and the wrong opponent," I stood up, buttoning my suit jacket. "Marcus, call an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning. And Richard—help me trace the Sterling Fund's capital flow. I want to know precisely which foreign bank is funneling this dirty money."
