Chapter 9 - WHY I HID MY FATHER

My classmates finally learned exactly who Dad was.
Some treated me like celebrity.
I hated it.
Others accused me of using him.
That hurt more.
A boy said:
“If my dad ran city hall, I could get coach fired too.”
I almost punched him.
Didn't.
Instead I said:
“My dad didn't suspend anyone.”
“Whatever.”
There was no winning hallway argument.
At home I asked:
“Can I transfer?”
Dad answered:
“Yes.”
Too quickly.
“You don't want me to stay?”
“I want you safe.”
“But if I leave, Trent wins.”
Dad shook head.
“Your education isn't scoreboard.”
I stayed.
Not because of Trent.
Because Maya stayed.
Jordan stayed.

The younger kids who spoke deserved not to become invisible after cameras left.
