Chapter 26 - TRENT APOLOGIZES

Months later Trent asked through counselor if he could apologize.
I said yes.
School office.
Adults nearby.
He looked smaller without football crowd.
“I'm sorry.”
I waited.
“For what?”
He looked uncomfortable.
Fair question.
“For shoving you.”
“And?”
“Cookies.”
“And?”
He sighed.
“Calling you poor.”
“And?”
Longer.
“Making people give us boxes.”
Better.
“Why?”
He stared at hands.
“Because everybody let us.”
That was probably most truthful sentence.
Then:
“I thought because I was captain, people couldn't tell me no.”
“What changed?”
“You did.”
I shook head.
“No.”
He looked up.
“Cameras did.”
He almost smiled.
“Okay.”
I didn't tell him I forgave.
Didn't tell him I hated.
Conversation ended.
