Chapter 6 - TRENT’S FATHER

Trent’s father was Russell Walker.

Owner of Walker Construction Group.

One of Fairmont’s largest contractors.

I knew the name.

Dad knew it much better.

Walker Construction was bidding on the city’s new $42 million athletic complex.

Russell was also president of Ridgeway Football Boosters.

Conflict.

Dad immediately disclosed everything to city ethics counsel.

Then Russell called him.

I heard only Dad’s side.

“No.”

Pause.

“No private meeting.”

Longer pause.

“This involves our children and an active investigation.”

Pause.

“Then speak through counsel.”

Dad ended call.

“What did he want?”

“To resolve things between families.”

“What does that mean?”

“Usually depends how much someone wants you not to ask.”

Two hours later Russell’s attorney offered to repay the destroyed cookies and cover my medical evaluation.

Dad declined any private resolution requiring confidentiality.

“If they want to pay the $144, school can credit it publicly through normal process.”

No deal.

No silence.

Russell Walker had underestimated him.
