One night I asked Dad why he worked so hard hiding my connection to city hall.
“I wasn't hiding.”
“You never told school.”
“They knew emergency contact.”
“Kids didn't.”
“Because you asked.”
True.
“But wouldn't people have treated me better?”
He thought.
“Some.”
“Then why not?”
“Because being my son shouldn't be your safety plan.”
That sentence stayed.
“If people only stop hurting you when powerful person arrives, system isn't safe.”
Exactly what happened.
Trent stopped when SUV came.
What about Maya when no SUV?
Jordan?
Caleb?
Other kids?
That was why investigation mattered.
