Chapter 8 - THE PRINCIPAL’S EMAIL

Principal Porter had known complaints existed.
Email recovered.
Teacher Ms. Elena Rivera wrote eight months earlier:
Several younger students report varsity players taking fundraiser inventory and telling them Coach Hall authorized it. Please investigate.
Porter responded:
I will address with athletics. We need to avoid unnecessary disruption during playoffs.
No formal investigation followed.
Why?
Ridgeway reached state championship semifinals.
Football brought donations.
Russell Walker promised $2 million toward stadium renovation.
Children’s complaints became “unnecessary disruption.”
Dad read email and said nothing for a long time.
Then:
“This is what institutional failure looks like.”
