Chapter 9 - Eleanor Wakes Up Angry

On the fourth hospital day, Eleanor asked for a mirror.

Grace resisted.

“Why?”

“Because everyone keeps looking at me like I broke.”

She looked.

Bruising.

Bandages.

Exhaustion.

Still herself.

Then she asked for lipstick.

Grace laughed.

“You are impossible.”

“I am alive.”

That sentence changed something.

Eleanor applied a muted red shade with an unsteady hand.

Then asked Leah:

“When do we tell Jason?”

“Soon.”

“I want to watch.”

“You won’t be in the room.”

“Then record it.”

Leah smiled slightly.

“Possibly.”

Eleanor’s anger was no longer only at Jason.

Some of it was at herself.

She redirected that carefully.

Shame wanted isolation.

Strategy required participation.

She gave a full statement.

Every date.

Every conversation.

The hotel morning.

The ambiguous answer about intimacy.

The proposal.

The documents.

The push.

When finished, Leah asked:

“Do you believe Jason ever loved you?”

Eleanor stared through the window.

“I believe he loved being wanted.”

Then she corrected herself.

“No.”

She looked back.

May you like

“He loved control.”
