Chapter 10 - The Dead Woman Calls

Police invited Jason to a second interview.
He came voluntarily.
Leah began calmly.
“Tell me again what happened.”
“We opened the door for a picture.”
“Whose idea?”
“Mine.”
“Then?”
“She stepped close.”
“And fell?”
“Yes.”
“Did you touch her?”
“No.”
Leah placed a still photograph on the table.
Jason stared.
His two hands on Eleanor’s back.
He stopped breathing.
“What is that?”
“Video.”
Silence.
“You said you didn’t touch her.”
“I may have tried to catch her.”
“From behind?”
Jason’s attorney interrupted.
“We’re done.”
Leah nodded.
Then placed a phone on the table.
It rang.
Jason stared.
Leah answered and turned on speaker.
Eleanor’s voice filled the room.
“Hello, Jason.”
Every trace of color left his face.
He physically recoiled.
Eleanor continued:
“You should have looked down longer.”
Jason’s attorney grabbed his arm.
“Do not speak.”
Jason whispered anyway:
“You’re alive.”
“Yes.”
For Eleanor, hearing fear in his voice did not feel as satisfying as she expected.
It felt empty.
So she said only:
“Goodbye, Jason.”
And disconnected.
Police arrested him minutes later on attempted murder and related charges.
His perfect plan ended not with inheritance papers—
but handcuffs.
Yet Charles remained free.

And Eleanor knew Jason had not designed everything alone.
