Chapter 29 - The Dance

At Eleanor’s eightieth birthday, Ava organized a small dinner.

No enormous ballroom.

No press.

No men pretending not to care about her fortune.

Grace.

Lucas.

Maya Torres.

A few executives.

Old friends.

Near the end, Arthur Bennett approached Eleanor.

Seventy-six.

Widower.

Former architect.

They had known each other socially for years.

“Dance?”

Eleanor raised an eyebrow.

“Are you after my hotels?”

“Only if they come with free breakfast.”

She laughed.

Then accepted.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No lightning.

No promise of eternal love.

Arthur’s hand remained politely at her back.

Eleanor felt something she had not expected.

Not twenty-nine.

Not young.

Eighty.

And happy.

May you like

That was better.
