Chapter 5 - Fifty-Two Years

Before Charles.

Before Jason.

Before Whitmore Hotels became an empire.

There had been Daniel Monroe.

Eleanor was twenty-seven.

Daniel repaired elevators in the first hotel Eleanor inherited from her father.

He had grease beneath his fingernails and absolutely no fear of her surname.

They spent eleven months together.

Then Daniel accepted a union job in Chicago.

Eleanor refused to leave the company.

He refused to spend his life waiting for her meetings to end.

There was no death.

No grand betrayal.

Only two stubborn young people choosing different futures.

Eleanor always assumed there would be someone else.

There never was.

Work expanded into every empty room.

At seventy-nine, she did not miss Daniel specifically.

She missed the version of herself who once expected love to remain possible.

Jason had recognized that hunger.

And used it.

That knowledge cut deeper than losing money ever could.

Grace found Eleanor awake at three in the morning.

“You need sleep.”

“I spent fifty-two years being respectable.”

Grace sat beside her.

“What does that mean?”

“I built companies. I hosted charity dinners. I never embarrassed myself.”

“Until?”

“Until I wanted someone to touch my hand.”

Grace said nothing.

Eleanor’s eyes filled.

“I let a thirty-four-year-old man convince me I was desired.”

“You were desired.”

“For my money.”

“By him.”

Eleanor looked at her.

Grace continued:

“Do not let one criminal rewrite every feeling you had as foolish.”

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Jason’s deception was real.

So was her laughter.

Her hope.

Her desire to be seen.

May you like

She would have to learn how both truths could exist at once.
