Chapter 23 - Charles Tells the Whole Truth

Charles finally stopped minimizing.

He admitted selecting Jason deliberately.

Jason had approached him months earlier seeking hospitality consulting work.

Charles researched him.

Discovered his history with wealthy older women.

Instead of avoiding him, Charles saw opportunity.

“I thought he could make you happy.”

Eleanor almost laughed.

“You thought he could make me distracted.”

“Yes.”

“Say it properly.”

Charles cried.

“I wanted you distracted.”

“Why?”

“Because I was stealing from you.”

The sentence hung between them.

Charles had never expected murder, he insisted.

Evidence supported that prosecutors could not prove he agreed to killing her.

But he knowingly facilitated manipulation.

Supplied financial information.

Paid Jason.

Encouraged marriage when it served succession strategy.

Signed the control-transition escrow.

Charles pleaded guilty to fraud, conspiracy around financial exploitation, and related offenses.

His role in the attempted murder remained legally distinct.

Eleanor was glad.

Justice did not require making him guilty of what could not be proved.
