Chapter 16 - Grace’s Safeguard

Jason’s financial plan formally failed.

The trust committee rejected every attempted transfer.

The voting proxy was suspended.

The replacement pages Miriam never notarized were invalid.

The beneficiary changes faced fraud challenges.

The assignment of personal investments was frozen.

Grace explained everything to Eleanor.

“You were never as exposed as Jason believed.”

Eleanor frowned.

“That isn’t comforting.”

“I know.”

“He still pushed me.”

“Yes.”

Eleanor looked at the trust documents Grace drafted years ago.

One clause required independent review for major transfers benefiting a spouse within one year of marriage.

“Why did you put this in?”

Grace smiled.

“Because you once told me love makes intelligent people temporarily optimistic.”

Eleanor laughed.

“I said that?”

“At sixty-eight.”

“Prescient.”

The clause had been designed generically.

Not because Grace distrusted future love.

Because no one person—not even Eleanor—should be able to move an empire impulsively without procedural friction.

Good governance had done what emotion could not.
