Chapter 20 - Eleanor Returns Home

Seven weeks after the fall, Eleanor returned to Whitmore House.

Staff lined the entrance.

She hated that.

“Everyone go back to work.”

They laughed.

Her bedroom felt unchanged.

That bothered her.

Jason’s shirts remained in a closet.

Flowers he had once sent had dried in a vase.

Eleanor stood before them.

Then called housekeeping.

“Please remove everything of his.”

The housekeeper asked:

“Throw it away?”

Eleanor thought.

“No.”

Evidence first.

Even heartbreak required chain of custody now.

That made her laugh.

Later she opened the terrace doors.

For fifty-two years, silence in this house had felt normal.

Then Jason made it feel temporary.

Now silence felt different.

Chosen.

Not imposed.

Eleanor realized she did not fear being alone anymore.

She feared becoming ashamed of wanting company.

Those were not the same.
