Chapter 11 - Jason Talks

For two days Jason said nothing.
Then his attorney requested a proffer.
Jason wanted a deal.
Not immunity.
Reduced exposure for cooperation against Charles.
Leah asked:
“Who planned the financial side?”
“Charles.”
“Who planned killing Eleanor?”
Jason hesitated.
“Me.”
That distinction mattered.
Charles had allegedly discussed what would happen “if Eleanor were gone.”
He had never explicitly ordered murder.
Jason claimed he interpreted the opportunity himself.
“Why the helicopter?”
“No body meant delay.”
“A missing person doesn’t give you immediate inheritance.”
“The signed authority gave me control while status was unresolved.”
Leah stared.
Cold.
Calculated.
Jason admitted he expected to use the durable authority before death was legally established.
Move liquid assets.
Exercise voting rights.
Then later transition under spouse provisions.
“What was Charles supposed to get?”
“Operational control of Whitmore Hotels.”
“And you?”
“Personal investment assets.”
“How much?”
Jason smiled bitterly.
“I thought over two hundred million.”
He had never understood the full estate.
Most assets could not be taken that way.
Grace had built too many safeguards.
Jason had tried to murder Eleanor for a fortune that, legally, he could never have controlled as completely as he believed.
Greed had made him sloppy.
May you like
Arrogance made him worse.
