Chapter 28 - Bellweather Cay

One year later, Eleanor returned to Bellweather Cay.
By boat.
Absolutely not by helicopter.
Lucas met her at the dock.
So did rescue swimmer Maya Torres and pilot Daniel Hayes.
Daniel still blamed himself.
“I opened the door.”
“You followed aviation procedure for the route you were given.”
“I should have seen him.”
Eleanor shook her head.
“Jason did this.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
Sometimes survivors were not the only people who needed permission to stop carrying someone else’s crime.
They visited the shoreline near the rescue location.
Eleanor stood there quietly.
Then removed a white shawl from her bag.
Not the original.
A new one.
She let the wind catch it.
But kept both feet firmly on the dock.
Lucas laughed.
“That’s terrifying.”
“So am I.”

For the first time, Eleanor laughed at the place where Jason expected her story to end.
