Chapter 8 - Eva’s Secret Friend

Eva blamed herself.

“If I didn’t give Lily bread, would she be dead?”

William crouched in front of her.

“No.”

“But she said she was hungry.”

“You helped somebody who needed help.”

“Mom got mad.”

William paused.

Claire was still being questioned.

He didn’t know what to tell his daughter about her mother.

So he chose the truth he understood.

“Sometimes grown-ups get scared when secrets come out.”

Eva nodded.

“Lily told me not to tell Mom.”

William’s attention sharpened.

“She did?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She said Mom might be scared of Grandpa.”

“Grandpa Harold?”

Eva nodded.

William felt an unpleasant chill.

Harold had supposedly died when Eva was four.

Eva barely remembered him.

“Did Lily say Grandpa is alive?”

Eva shook her head.

“No.”

Then she added:

“She said someone still listens to him.”
