Chapter 1 - The Hand Beneath the Floor

Seven-year-old Eva Morgan sat cross-legged on the kitchen floor with half a slice of bread hidden behind her back.
The old farmhouse was unusually quiet.
Her mother, Claire, had gone upstairs fifteen minutes earlier after telling Eva to finish her milk and stay away from the pantry.
But Eva wasn’t interested in the pantry.
She was watching the rectangular metal grate beside the kitchen island.
Slowly, she tore off another piece of bread.
Then she whispered:
“Are you still there?”
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Eva leaned closer.
“It’s me.”
A pale hand appeared beneath the grate.
Two fingers curled through the narrow opening.
Eva smiled.
“I brought more.”
She carefully pushed the bread between the bars.
The hand took it.
Then disappeared.
Eva had discovered the woman three days earlier after dropping a toy bead beneath the kitchen cabinet.
At first she thought an animal lived below the house.
Then she heard coughing.
The following morning, a voice whispered:
“Please don’t tell anyone yet.”
Eva had asked why.
The woman answered:
“Because I don’t know who I can trust.”
Eva didn’t understand.
But she understood hunger.
So she brought bread.
Crackers.
An apple sliced into pieces.
Today she had barely finished passing down another piece when footsteps sounded behind her.
“EVA!”
The girl spun around.
Claire stood in the doorway.
Her face had gone completely white.
Eva immediately started crying.
“Mom, sorry.”
Claire rushed forward.
“What are you doing?”
“I thought she was hungry.”
Claire grabbed Eva’s wrist.
“How long?”
“Mom—”
“How long have you been feeding her?”
“Three days.”
Claire looked toward the grate.
Something close to panic crossed her face.
Then she turned back toward Eva.
“I told you never to touch this.”
“You didn’t tell me somebody lived there.”
Claire’s grip tightened.
Eva whimpered.
Then the front door opened.
“Claire?”
William Morgan stepped into the hallway carrying his work bag.
He had returned two hours early from a meeting.
Then he heard Eva crying.
William entered the kitchen and froze.
His daughter was on the floor.
Claire stood over her.
“What happened?”
Claire released Eva.
“Nothing.”
Eva ran toward him.
William scooped her into his arms.
“Why are you crying?”
Eva buried her face against his shoulder.
William looked at Claire.
“What did you do?”
“She disobeyed me.”
“About what?”
Before Claire could answer—
a metallic sound came from beneath them.
Scrape.
Scrape.
Then three fingers slowly rose through the floor grate.
William stopped breathing.
Claire backed away.
A frightened female voice came from beneath the kitchen.
“William…”
He stared downward.
The voice came again.
“I’m here.”
William almost dropped his daughter.
He knew that voice.
He hadn’t heard it in six years.
“Oh my God.”
Claire said nothing.
William whispered:
“Lily?”
The hand curled around the metal grate.
“Please help me.”
William turned toward his wife.
Claire’s face had lost every trace of color.
And in that moment William understood something terrifying.
Whatever was beneath his kitchen floor—
May you like
Claire already knew about it.
