Chapter 29 - Eva’s Question

One night Eva asked William:
“Why didn’t Lily scream?”
He thought carefully.
“Maybe she was afraid nobody would hear.”
“I heard her.”
“You did.”
“Because I dropped my bead.”
William smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“So if I didn’t drop it…”
He understood where the thought was going.
He pulled her closer.
“We don’t know what would have happened.”
“But I helped?”
“You helped.”
Eva looked proud.
Then serious again.
“Mom says I shouldn’t keep secrets from you anymore.”
William nodded.
“That’s a good rule.”
“What about birthday presents?”
He laughed.
“Some secrets are surprises.”
Eva thought.
“What’s the difference?”
“A surprise has an ending where somebody feels happy.”
“And a bad secret?”
“Usually somebody stays scared because of it.”
Eva nodded.

That was a definition William wished the adults in Claire’s family had learned decades earlier.
