Chapter 12 - The Key

After Harold’s funeral, Lily received nothing.
No inheritance.
No message.
Then, three months ago, a lawyer in Nevada contacted her.
He had been instructed years earlier to deliver a small package if Harold died.
Inside was a brass key.
And a note:
When you’re ready to know what your sister protected, open Box 417.
The handwriting was Margaret’s.
Not Harold’s.
The note was dated 2001.
Twenty-two years after Margaret supposedly disappeared.
William felt his pulse accelerate.
“Margaret was alive in 2001?”
“Yes.”
“So your father lied about that too.”
“Yes.”
The safe-deposit box contained deeds, photographs, and recorded testimony from Margaret.
Lily brought copies back east.
Someone learned she had returned.
The night she reached town, she was confronted outside a motel.
She remembered being forced into a vehicle.
Then waking inside the underground room.
She never saw who brought her there.
But she heard voices.
One belonged to Thomas.
The other—
May you like
Claire.
