Chapter 6 - Harold Bennett

According to Lily, Harold Bennett had not always been Harold Bennett.
Before Claire and Lily were born, he was legally named Harold Vale.
In 1989 he changed his surname.
Why?
Lily had only recently discovered the answer.
He had been associated with a property-management company investigated for fraud.
Money disappeared.
Records vanished.
One accountant disappeared too.
No charges were ever filed against Harold.
Years later he moved states, bought the farmhouse, and raised his daughters.
William struggled to understand.
“What does any of this have to do with you?”
Lily looked at him.
“Dad left me something.”
“What?”
“A key.”
“To what?”
“A safe-deposit box.”
Inside were documents proving the farmhouse had never belonged solely to Harold.
Half had been inherited by someone else.
A woman named Margaret Vale.
Harold’s older sister.
William had never heard that name.
Then Lily said:
“She disappeared in 1997.”
William felt cold.
“How?”
“Nobody knows.”
Lily looked directly at him.
May you like
“But her initials are carved into the room under your kitchen.”
