Chapter 4 - Claire’s First Lie

Claire was questioned separately.
She claimed she had discovered Lily in the room four days earlier.
“She appeared there?”
Detective Maria Santos asked.
“I found the pantry door open.”
“And you didn’t call police?”
“I panicked.”
“Your sister was declared missing four years ago.”
“I know.”
“You found her imprisoned in your home, and you panicked for four days?”
Claire looked down.
William watched through the observation window.
He had never seen his wife look so frightened.
Santos continued.
“Who locked Lily in the room?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who owns this house?”
“My husband.”
“Before him?”
Claire hesitated.
“My father.”
That mattered.
The farmhouse had belonged to Claire and Lily’s parents.
William purchased it from Claire’s father, Harold Bennett, shortly after marrying Claire.
Harold had died three years earlier.
Or at least William had attended his funeral too.
For the first time, a thought occurred to him that felt absurd.
