Chapter 11 - Lily’s Missing Four Years
Lily explained why she disappeared originally.
Four years earlier she had been helping Harold organize medical and financial paperwork.
He had recently been diagnosed with cancer.
While sorting files, Lily discovered records belonging to Margaret Vale.
She asked questions.
Harold became furious.
Then Claire became involved.
“Claire told me to stop,” Lily said.
“Why?”
“She said Dad had done bad things when we were children and that digging would destroy everyone.”
“What bad things?”
“I didn’t know yet.”
Lily left the house after an argument.
Two days later her car was found abandoned.
William interrupted.
“So you staged your own disappearance?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“My father.”
William stared.
Lily explained that Harold intercepted her before she reached police.
He convinced her Margaret had been dangerous.
That Margaret had threatened Claire.
That revealing the old property fraud would expose their mother to criminal liability too.
Lily believed him.
At first.
Harold gave her money and told her to leave.
“Why did everyone think you were dead?”
“He said it would protect Claire.”
“And you agreed?”
“I was terrified.”
She moved to Oregon under another surname.
Then Harold supposedly died.
And Lily assumed the family nightmare was over.
