Chapter 19 - Finding Margaret

Margaret was seventy-one.

She lived under her real name in a small town near the Canadian border.

Detectives approached her cautiously.

She wasn’t surprised.

“I wondered when Lily would finally force their hand.”

William met Margaret two days later.

She resembled Lily around the eyes.

“Why didn’t you come forward?”

“I tried.”

She opened a cabinet filled with files.

Complaints.

Letters.

Certified mail receipts.

Correspondence with attorneys.

Margaret had spent decades trying to establish the fraud.

But Harold repeatedly produced documents appearing to show she voluntarily transferred her interest.

Witnesses supported him.

One witness appeared on nearly every document.

Thomas.

Margaret lacked money to fight the family indefinitely.

Then she learned Claire and Lily were being used as leverage.

So she withdrew.

“I thought staying away protected them.”

William shook his head.

“It protected Harold.”

Margaret nodded sadly.

“I know that now.”

The same pattern appeared again.
