Chapter 27 - William and Claire

William did not immediately decide whether his marriage could survive.
Claire wanted forgiveness.
William wanted truth.
Those were not the same thing.
They attended counseling separately.
Claire admitted that after Harold died, she could have exposed everything.
Instead she continued accepting Thomas’s money.
Why?
Because by then the farmhouse had become valuable.
Because she feared losing status.
Because she had become accustomed to telling herself silence was necessary.
William asked:
“When did fear stop being the reason?”
Claire cried.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s the problem.”
William moved with Eva into a rented home temporarily.
The farmhouse remained part of the investigation.
