Chapter 14 - The Night Margaret Disappeared

Claire had been eight.
She woke to shouting.
Margaret was confronting Harold in the kitchen.
She accused him of forging her signature on property documents.
Harold insisted the farm needed to be sold.
Margaret threatened police.
Thomas arrived.
The argument intensified.
Claire hid on the stairs.
Eventually Harold took Margaret downstairs through the pantry door.
Thomas followed.
Margaret never came back upstairs that night.
“Did they hurt her?” William asked.
Claire shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“You never asked?”
“I was eight.”
“Later.”
Claire looked at him.
“Dad told me Margaret left because she hated us.”
“And when you grew up?”
“He told me if I ever reopened it, Mom could go to prison too.”
“For what?”
“Helping forge documents.”
William suddenly understood the architecture of Claire’s life.
Harold hadn’t merely convinced her to keep quiet.
He had built silence around fear.
One threat after another.
For decades.
That explained Claire.
It did not absolve her.
“You still left Lily down there.”
Claire cried.
May you like
“I know.”
