Chapter 6 - My Brother

There was one person besides Vanessa who knew almost every detail of the acquisition.

My younger brother, Nolan.

Nolan was Hale Meridian’s chief strategy officer.

He had wanted the CEO position for years.

Our father left control to me.

Nolan never openly complained.

But disappointment has a way of surviving polite smiles.

I called him.

“You free?”

“For you? Barely.”

“I’m back.”

“What?”

“Came home early.”

Silence.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Interesting.

Vanessa had said exactly the same thing.

I ignored it.

“Dinner tonight?”

“I’m booked.”

“Tomorrow?”

Another pause.

“Sure.”

After the call I checked Vanessa’s notebook again.

N.C.

Nathan Cross.

Probably.

But maybe not every time.

On one page there was an entry:

Nolan — documents after closing.

I stared at it.

My brother’s name was written plainly.

For the first time, I wondered whether Vanessa’s betrayal extended beyond our marriage.
