We found Vanessa’s second phone inside her car.
Not by stealing it.
Police obtained a warrant after evidence of forged legal records became substantial enough for an investigation.
The phone contained encrypted messages.
Many had been deleted.
Some survived.
Lucas:
We have enough medical history. Stop involving Maya.
Vanessa:
She is useful because courts believe children.
I had to stop reading for a moment.
Another:
If Adrian returns early, cancel everything.
Lucas:
He never returns early.
That line haunted me.
They knew my habits.
My schedule.
My predictable behavior.
I almost hadn’t come home.
Three days had changed everything.
Then investigators recovered another conversation.
Vanessa:
Nolan wants his share after integration.
Lucas:
Nolan doesn’t know half of this.
Vanessa:
He knows enough.
Lucas:
Enough to ruin him, not enough to protect us.
My brother had participated in something.
But he had not designed the entire plan.
